4 die in a fire caused by rice cooker

Four people were killed and another injured yesterday when a rice cooker exploded in Phnom Penh’s Daun Penh district. The victims were sleeping on mezzaine floor when the fire broke out at about 4.30am. Other family members managed to escape with either minor or no injuries.

Huge fire in Russian Market area

12 fire vehicles were called yesterday evening to a blaze that destroyed 2 buildings in Phnom Penh’s Toul Tum Poung district.
The fire spread rapidly from the house to other house in the street, causing panic amongst residents.

After an hour combatting intense flames, the fire was finally extinguished, the fire is believed to have been caused by an electricity surge, however investigators are still working to pinpoint the cause.

Chinese Man Keeps White Tiger on Roof Top

Authorities have confiscated a live lion from a Chinese man who was illegally raising the king of the jungle in his home. The story first came to light after neighbors took pictures which were shared on Twitter.

People do not have the right to raise wild animals, which is contrary to the law and Article 49 of the Law on Forestry, that states the keeping of rare or endangered species is prohibited.

The 70kg male lion will be sent to the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center.

A man has shot a young woman and then killed himself in front of market goers in Stung Treng.

Police say that the victim was the ex-girlfriend of the shooter and had broken up with the gunman and recently become engaged to another man. The gunman shot the unfortunate victim in a fit of jealousy and then killed himself.

The administration appealed to people in the city who are living, doing business, other occupations in Phnom Penh and who have not been vaccinated, to please hurry and get vaccinated from June 27 to July 08.

Traffic accidents cost near 1/2 billion dollars per year

The cost of road traffic accidents in Cambodia was found to be $466.8 million for 2019, or 1.7 per cent of annual Gross Domestic Product, according to a National Road Safety Committee press release on June 23.

The press release said that of the total cost, 88.8 per cent is due to loss of life and associated lifetime earnings.

Cambodia is among the beneficiaries of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded $46.6 million projects led by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO).

The projects will assist countries and communities to adopt more sustainable and climate-resilient practices, foster regional cooperation, and enact stronger policies to conserve biodiversity and deter illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Two gold dore bars weighing a combined 8.6kg have been produced during the three-day commissioning of the gold room.

The company had promised first gold before the end of the current quarter and achieved it with six days to spare.

Emerald is maintaining its guidance of 100,000-120,000 ounces per annum of production, with average production of 106,000ozpa at all-in sustaining costs of $754/oz, in line with its 2017 definitive feasibility study.

Lightning struck and killed two people in Kandal province while attempting to seek shelter during a thunderstorm on Tuesday.

A 53yr old man brought his son and his son-in-law to hunt animals by trapping in the afternoon, unknowing that he would return home alone.

Once it started to rain, the 2 younger men went under a tree seeking shelter, but were instead struck by lightning.

Traffic is leading cause of deaths and injuries in Cambodia

In 2019, Cambodia saw almost 13,700 injuries and more than 2,000 deaths due to traffic accidents – with an average of 5.4 people dying daily. Making road traffic the leading cause of deaths and injuries in the Kingdom.

75% of the fatalities are motorbike users, followed by pedestrians, family car users, and goods vehicle users. Over 80 percent of all registered vehicles involved in road accidents were motorbikes. Most fatalities occurred on national roads and within the capital.

196 new plants discovered around Tonle Sap Lake

A large variety of plants from the Tonle Sap Lake area have been discovered by officials from the Tonle Sap Authority (TSA), but one tree in particular has revealed that it provides many benefits.

The tree is a kind of flooded forest species. It grows around the Tonle Sap Lake in water during the wet season. The green leaves of the tree can be eaten and its bark is used for medicinal purposes such as the treatment of malaria, diarrhoea and syphilis. It's fruit can be fried and crushed then applied to teeth and gums to prevent tooth decay. The trunk can be used as a millstone, firewood and coal.

National Road 3 to Kampot be completed later this year

The completion of the road construction, originally planned for 2022, is now set in September this year. Stretching over 134km, the project started in May 2018 and costs $220 million.

Surveillance cameras are also planned to be installed to catch the speeding drivers, whereas the maximum speed is 80km per hour.

Australian miner Renaissance Minerals (Cambodia) Ltd on June 21 began the commercial operation of its $120 million Okvau Gold Project in the northeastern province of Mondulkiri, becoming the Kingdom’s first gold producer.

The Gold mining site and processing plant have the capacity to process nearly two million tonnes of ore per year.

The Phnom Penh government has allowed households to relocate to Kruos hamlet, about 18 km from the center of Phnom Penh city. As of this week, nearly 200 households with more than 300 fish rafts have been relocated. Another 150 households have been moved to Leuk Daek district, Kandal province, near Vinh Xuong international border gate, Vietnam’s An Giang province.

The decision to relocate houses, aims to protect waterway traffic, environment, ecosystem, and public health. But due to the urgent time and the Covid-19 pandemic, many households were unable to relocate within the time frame. Many fish cages were damaged during the move, causing heavy property loss. Some people had to cover their tents at the riverside or rent land from local people to live temporarily.

Strong winds bring down billboard in Kampot

The billboard reportedly came down at around 6:10am when rain and strong gusts of wind swept through the area. No one was injured by the metal structure fell but pillars supporting the billboard crashed into the roof of a nearby house and a parked car.

For the 1st quarter of this year, Cambodia welcomed a total of 82,839 international tourists, down a whopping 93 per cent from 1,160,067 over the same period last year.

Thai tourists ranked first at 41,794, followed by Chinese at 25,986, Vietnamese at 2,993, and Indonesian at 2,933. Other arrivals were from Korea, Taiwan, the US, Malaysia, Japan and France.

A video was posted by a shopkeeper to social media who was the unwilling target of what appears to have been an unprovoked attack by an American man – who was not wearing a face-mask, in apparent defiance of Royal Government rules. It was also noted that he was not wearing a motorcycle helmet – again, breaking the laws of Cambodia.

Few hours later the man located and arrested by local police.

Man kills wife and packs body into suitcase

The World Health Organisation warned that the transmission of Covid-19 through smoking remains a major concern, especially among smokers themselves.

Of concern is that smokers touch their mouth often with the hand that holds a cigarette, and if the coronavirus is present in it or their hand, the probability of contracting the virus is high. The lungs of smokers are not as good as those of non-smokers and therefore the possibility of contracting the virus is also higher. If smokers get the disease, their conditions would be more serious.

The Vietnamese foreign ministry has called on Cambodian authorities to ensure the welfare of people of Vietnamese origin, after Phnom Penh last week ordered the eviction of many households in floating villages on the Tonle Sap River.

Cambodia authorities said they would dismantle and relocate the floating houses, fish farms, and other “unregulated and illegal structures” on the river surface due to waterway pollution and disruption and asked everyone living in these structures to move out immediately.

Kingdom to launch new historic industrial gold manufacturing

Cambodia announced an official launch of the country’s first industrial gold manufacturing Mondulkiri province scheduled to begin on June 21.

After 14 years of feasibility study and exploration, the licensed Renaissance Minerals (Cambodia) Ltd. on June 10 produced Cambodia’s first semi-finished gold bars.

Forecasted produce three tonnes of pure gold on an annual average for the first eight years of operation. Cambodia expects to generate about $185 million per year as national income to be used for social and economic development.

Cambodia ratified the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer back on April 8th.

The Montreal Protocol is a well-established multilateral environmental agreement that is successfully preventing massive damage to human health and the environment from excessive ultraviolet radiation from the sun by phasing out the production and consumption of substances that deplete the ozone layer.

A total of 27 antiquities valued at around $3.8 million are to be returned from the US to Cambodia, according to a press statement of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts and the US embassy in Phnom Penh.

The 27 antiquities consist of Buddhism and Hinduism statues from the Angkorian era, such as a bronze meditating Buddha on a Naga throne, a Shiva idol and a Buddhist sandstone sculpture of Prajnaparamita.

Siem Reap provincial authorities and local communities in the Boeung Pearaing breeder conservation area have begun a project to deepen the shallow lake in order to save more than 130 species of breeder birds in the area.

Many birds have recently died due to hot weather and low water levels in the lake. To ensure biodiversity of breeder and rare birds in this area they need to restore the lake.

2 people were killed by lightning while 52 houses were damaged during thunderstorms in separate cases in Kampong Chhnang province on June 5-6. Rain with strong winds on the afternoon of June 6th, damaged 52 houses, three of which collapsed. A 40-year-old farmer was killed by lightning in the middle of his paddy field. Authorities are intervening to repair victims houses and provide some funds to the families of the deceased and assist with the funeral

An alert issued warning people of the imminent approach of a strong southeast monsoon and the fourth typhoon TS KOGUMA 21.04 The Strong southwest monsoon is scheduled to arrive today until June 15 while the typhoon is expected to hit on June 12. The typhoon is expected to travel from Hainan Island in China to the South China Sea before reaching Cambodia, and is expected to hit the coastal provinces hard so they need to brace for this typhoon.

The operator of the Apsara oil field development offshore Cambodia, has confirmed that all operations of its subsidiary in Cambodia, KrisEnergy (Cambodia) Ltd, will continue as normal, despite its parent company filing for liquidation on June 4.

Rare species court on camera in Kampong Speu preserve

As Cambodia marked National and World Environment Day celebrations on June 5, the Ministry of Environment announced sightings of some rare animals in Cambodia’s forests through the use of automatic cameras.

Cmeras placed in Phnom Oral Wildlife Sanctuary in Kampong Speu, Kampong Chhnang and Pursat provinces have revealed the ongoing presence of many rare species. Some of the animals caught on camera included elephants, clouded leopards, bears and deer.

Phnom Penh city government issued is forcing people to dismantle all floating houses, fish rafts, and boathouses along the river in all districts within seven days to protect the environment, ecosystems, biodiversity and peoples health.

The victim was driving home after a pleasant evening with friends when, suddenly, a group of 4 swordsmen on motorcycles, drove by his car and proceeded to attack with their weapons. Considerable damage was infected to the victims car.

8 journalists arrested for extortion

Police from Tbeng Meanchey district, arrested the 8 journalists for allegedly trying to extort money from a local timber depot.

They allegedly drove four vehicles to the timber depot, demanded money from the wood depot chief, who reportedly offered each person 100,000 riel, but the journalists refused, demanding $100 per person.

Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville expressway 51% complete

The construction of the $2 billion Expressway from Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville is 51.35 per cent completed. According to Ministry of Public Works and Transport, the project is expected to be finished in 2023.

Environment Ministry urges people to plant more trees

Japan gives more ambulances for Cambodia's Covid fight

The handover ceremony was held on June 4 at the Ministry of Health, with the Japanese government providing an additional 30 ambulances to Cambodia to assist the country in the fight against Covid-19, bringing the total to 70 since the pandemic again.

In a press release, the embassy said Japan had supplied a series of medical equipment including the 70 ambulances, 10 X-ray machines, 26 diagnostic ultrasound equipment, 63 oxygen generators and 100 ICU beds, among others, to Cambodia to assist the government in this ongoing battle.

50 people arrested for criminal and drug offenses

Pursat province recored another case of suspected alcohol poisoning, which has left 7 dead and 30 waiting for treatment in the provincial hospital. Reports stated that the victims of the alleged alcohol poisoning were drinking at a party. All of the 7 who passed away are women.

Restrictions re-imposed in capital as Covid cases surge

The Phnom Penh Municipal Administration has decided to re-impose the suspension of all occupations and business activities deemed as posing high risk of transmission for 14 day effective at the onset of June 3 through June 16.

Businesses and occupations deemed as posting high risks include entertainment clubs, KTVs, nightclubs, discotheques, beer gardens, casinos, resorts, museum, parks, massage parlours, cinemas and sport centres.

All gatherings with more than 15 people are also banned, except among family members in the same home, at funerals permitted by the authorities, or among health workers who collect specimens for Covid-19 testing, and providers of emergency services.

21 garment workers injured in a traffic accident

Both governments have further agreed to build roads and bridges across the border and to set out joint goals aiming to strengthen and promote mutual cooperation. The upgrading of border gates is part of cooperation on land border demarcation based on the spirit of friendship and good neighbourliness.

The new international border gate is located in Prey Veng province of Cambodia and Tay Ninh province of Vietnam.
